What is ADHD?
ADHD is a developmental disorder and involves five primary problems in a child’s ability to control behavior:
- Impulse Control or Inhibition
- Difficulty Sustaining Attention
- Excessive Activity
- Difficulty Following Rules and Instructions
- Excessive Variability in their Responses to Situations
How Common is ADHD?
ADHD is one of the most common childhood developmental behavioral disorders. It affects up to 5-7% of the school age population and accounts for the largest proportion of children referred to mental health programs in this country.
How can AD/HD be managed?
AD/HD can be managed through a combination of medical and behavioral treatment modalities.
What types of AD/HD exist?
- ADHD predominantly inattentive type
- ADHD predominantly hyperactive-impulsive type
- ADHD combined type
What can I do at school to help my child?
Your Child may be eligible for school accommodations under a 504 plan to help them have a better learning experience. If your child has been diagnosed with AD/HD they may qualify for these helpful tools.
What secodary disorders may accompany ADHD?
Many times children with ADHD have secondary problems of Oppositional defiant Disorder (ODD). Conduct Disorder (CD), anxiety disorders, language disorders and /or depression which could result in poor school performance, low academic achievement, learning disabilities and social/emotional impairment. |
